Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, otherwise known as the “double chin.” It is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition that can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women.

The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

Treatment with Kybella® is customized to the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile. Once the aesthetic response is achieved with Kybella®, retreatment is not expected. It may take 2-6 sessions to achieve desired results. Results will vary from patient to patient.

How does Kybella® work?

Synthetic deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella®. The original molecule is naturally occurring in the body and typically plays a role in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella® reduces fullness under the chin by destroying fat cells contained there permanently. It is injected under the chin through a series of in-office procedures that typically take 30 minutes. The number of procedures needed is determined by the size and quality of the pocket under the chin and your specific desired aesthetic goal. Once the fat cells are destroyed, the area can no longer store or accumulate fat and the treatment is considered permanent.

What can I expect from a Kybella® treatment?

As with most injectable treatments, some swelling, bruising, or numbness under the chin is common. Rare reactions such as an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing or injection site problems such as bruising, hair loss, open sores or drainage around the injection site have been reported but are exceedingly uncommon. Most localized swelling or bruising are self-limiting and are expected to recover within a few days. Dr. DeFatta will recommend care techniques to minimize these side effects and help you recover quickly.

Neuromodulators (including Botox and Dysport) relax the muscles and reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the face and neck. These treatments combat forehead lines, glabella lines (between the brows), crows feet (around the eyes), smile lines, neck lines, and other wrinkles associated with aging.

While BOTOX and Dysport both use the same substance (botulinum toxin A) and are based on the same mechanism of action, the size of the molecules in the injections are significantly different.

- Dysport contains smaller molecules of botulinum toxin type A than BOTOX.

- Dysport can spread through your cells more easily

- Dysport may begin working slightly faster than BOTOX

- BOTOX may last slightly longer than Dysport

The amount of units needed can differ from person to person depending upon your desired outcome, the area of concern to be treated, the strength of the muscles in the area, and whether the treatment is for prevention or to treat existing fine lines and wrinkles and their severity.

Most patients can expect to notice early results of BOTOX between three to five days following treatment. The degree of muscle relaxation can continue to evolve for about two weeks and the results last for three to four months. The longer the BOTOX treatments have been routinely performed, the more relaxed the facial wrinkles will appear over time. Results of Dysport are similar, but often with a slightly quicker onset of action.
